Friends and Neighbors,
With Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we’ve had the opportunity to remember and honor those who served and died for our country. We only enjoy our freedoms because brave men and women have put everything on the line for us.
My grandfather, Mark Allen McKell, was one of the courageous men who served during WWII. I am grateful for his sacrifice and all those who have fought to protect our country, especially those who paid the ultimate price. To all those who have served in our district, thank you.

Utah Continues to Rank #1
In the latest rankings from U.S. News and World Report, Utah has once again claimed the coveted title of the No. 1 best state overall, marking our second consecutive year at the top.
The study examined over 70 indicators across eight categories: healthcare, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, natural environment, and crime and corrections. Notably, Utah has made significant strides, jumping from No. 5 to No. 2 in education and from No. 15 to No. 9 in crime and corrections.
This recognition validates what Utahns already know. From our thriving economy to our breathtaking landscapes, Utah continues to stand out as the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
Salt Lake Chamber Business Champion Award
I am honored to have received the 2024 Legislative Business Champion award from the Salt Lake Chamber. This award is given to legislators who work to enhance Utah’s business-friendly climate. I will continue to support our business community and find ways to bolster our economy.
Ribbon Cutting for Spanish Fork High School
I was thrilled to attend the ribbon cutting for the new Spanish Fork High School this past month. My dad was in the first graduating class to complete all four years in the old Spanish Fork High School built in 1962. Now, my daughter will graduate from the brand-new building. It’s awesome to see the progress in our community.
The new Spanish Fork High School provides students with the best place to learn, achieve their goals, and prepare for the future. I am excited to see all they accomplish!
Increasing Teacher Pay
Teachers are the bedrock of our society and provide invaluable guidance to the next generation. I have been deeply blessed with countless incredible teachers in my lifetime. In recent years, we have worked diligently to acknowledge the contributions of educators by prioritizing initiatives aimed at enhancing teacher pay.
As a result of these efforts, Utah has emerged as a leader in teacher compensation within the Intermountain West. With a starting salary of $49,000, Utah now boasts the region’s most competitive initial pay for teachers. Furthermore, the state’s average educator salary stands at just over $63,000 – a significant increase in recent years.
These advancements in teacher pay not only recognize the vital role educators play in shaping the future but also reflect Utah’s commitment to retaining talented teachers.
Confirmation of Utah’s Two Newest Judges
It is the Senate’s responsibility to provide advice and consent to various appointments made by the governor. During May interim, we met to confirm several appointments, including two new judges—Judge Richard Pehrson and Judge Richard Daynes—both for the 3rd District Court. These individuals have shown exceptional expertise and a strong dedication to public service. I am grateful for their willingness to serve our state in this new capacity. Watch their confirmations here.
